Law & Self-Defence Seminar: Added 11/06/11 Independent Martial Arts Tae Kwon-Do Instructors and Students from Malvern and Toddington clubs recently attended a Seminar on Law and Self-Defence. The seminar was presented by Master James Rolf (Toddington Tae Kwon-Do) who holds the Advanced Certificate in the teaching of Conflict Management, Personal Safety and Self Defence from the British Self Defence Governing Body (BSDGB). The seminar initially focused on many aspects of law, which included the sources of law, the court system in England and Wales and the differences between criminal and civil law. Master Rolf then identified and examined various types of offences and use of force by examining each in turn. Whilst most martial arts clubs teach self-defence as part of its training syllabus it is vital instructors and students comprehend the implications of their actions, whether applied within the training environment or in public. Master Rolf stated I believe that if Martial Arts instructors are teaching students a skill that, if used, is potentially lethal, and then they also have a duty to impart the knowledge of when they are at liberty to use that skill. Also, as a responsible organisation, IMA should be seen to not only ensure that its instructors give a consistent message to students in the organisation, but also ensure it is the correct message. By delivering seminars like the one recently, I hope to bring a consistency and awareness to the instructors enabling them to confidently pass that information on to their students. Master Summers (IMA Academy Owner and Chief Instructor) has been instrumental in furthering the education and development of his academy instructors through formal instruction, practical sessions and associated training courses. Master Summers commented I am very lucky and privileged to have so many dedicated instructors who are committed to the Academy and its membership". They are all assets to the clubs success and continue to attend as many courses and seminars as possible to ensure that we maintain the highest standards at the club. I am proud of every one of them and I consider them all as part of my Tae Kwon-Do family. Within the last 12 months the instructors have also attended child safeguarding, first aid and risk assessment courses. Well done to everyone. |
